Blackboard Learning system Student Guide

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is a web-based learning environment that enables educators to enhance on-campus learning and/or deliver distance learning by bringing their course materials, class discussions, assignments, and assessments (tests or quizzes) to the Web.

What technological requirements/abilities do I need to log in and use Blackboard?

Please see the Technology Checklist for a list of technical requirements. To be able to fully participate in an online course, you must have reliable Internet access. You must have basic computer knowledge such as word processing skills and experience using the Internet and web browser software. If you have no experience using the Internet or a computer, it is recommended that you obtain computer skills training before participating in an online course.

How do I log into Blackboard?

The URL for Blackboard is http://blackboard.bramsonort.edu/. (Please NOTE: no www in this address!) Click Login. To access the web portion of your course, you need a username and password. The username is your first initial and your last name (e.g. jdoe for  John Doe). Your password for Blackboard is the first six numbers of your social security number. The same login information is used for accessing your College email account at http://mail.bramsonort.edu

What if I can't log into Blackboard?

If you cannot log into Blackboard call Mr. Damindra Persaud at 718-261-5800 ext. 105 or via e-mail at distancelearning@bramsonort.edu. Before you do this, please keep in mind that you must be a currently registered student to access Blackboard.

What if I do not see the courses I registered for?

Not every course uses Blackboard. You may be registered for four classes, and have only two use Blackboard, so you will only see those two when you log in.

What can I do if I need access to my class right away?
If you can log into Blackboard, but do not see a course, your instructor can add you to his or her course roster on Blackboard. If you are a new student, it may take time for your user account to be created on Blackboard. If you registered late for a Blackboard course, call Mr. Damindra Persaud at 718-261-5800 ext. 105 or via e-mail at distancelearning@bramsonort.edu.

Overview of the Welcome Screen
The Welcome screen is a personalized view of Blackboard. You will see your course listed under the My Courses section. You will also see a course called Student Blackboard Orientation which is an online orientation for you to explore features of Blackboard. It is highly recommended you view the Orientation, as within it are valuable documents on how to use the features of Blackboard.

Overview of a Course Site
Once within a course site (after you log in and click the link for your course) use the navigation buttons down the left-hand side of the screen to view various areas of the class. Instructors can customize each course site with different names on the navigation buttons on the left so one course can look very different from another.

Accessing Course Materials

Use the navigation buttons on the left to access course materials such as the syllabus. The materials can be in several different formats, including html, text, audio, video and word processing documents. You would click a navigation button, such as Course Materials or Syllabus, to see what documents are in that section.

An instructor can attach a document for you to read. When a file is attached, it appears as a link. You must click on the link to access the information. Depending on your computer configuration, how the file was linked, and the type of file, several things may happen when you click on a link:

  • The link may open within the browser window.
  • The link may open a new browser window.
  • The link may prompt you with a dialog box, asking if you want to save the file to a local drive.
  • The link may launch a different program (such as Microsoft Word or Power Point) and display the file - unless you do not have the program. If you do not have Power Point on your computer, you can download the free Power-Point viewer from Microsoft’s web site.

Send E-mail

The e-mail function is used to provide a quick method of contacting course participants. Note: The e-mail function works within Blackboard. It does not contain spell check and does not save sent messages. This e-mail function provides a way for you to send e-mail to other classmates and instructors. Mail that is sent will go to the recipient’s Bramson ORT e-mail account (unless their mail is being forwarded to a different account). You cannot read messages within Blackboard.

Submitting Homework

All homework files are sent to the instructor through "Digital Dropbox". Use BlackBoard e-mail for message exchange only.

Exiting a Course - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
Click the logout image (looks like a red arrow coming out of an open door) at the top of the screen.

If you are using a computer in an on campus lab, failure to logout of Blackboard will allow others to have access to your e-mail account.
